In mid-March, we went for a walk around downtown Freeport, shortly after L.L. Bean and most of the other stores in town closed as a precaution for the COVID-19 pandemic. This was also before Maine’s statewide stay-at-home order went into effect. It was so strange to see downtown Freeport so quiet and empty. It is usually a busy area with many tourists shopping from store to store. It was especially eerie to see L.L. Bean closed and the doors locked, since the flagship store is normally open 24 hours a day, and it had only previously closed briefly five times in it’s history.
